Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is the greenest and lowest-cost transportation fuel available today. With additional advantages that range from eco-friendliness to economic stimulus, it’s easy to see why natural gas powers 15+ million (source) vehicles on the road today. Learn more about the facts and advantages of CNG Vehicles.
What Is CNG?
CNG is a readily available (and fast-growing!) alternative to gasoline and diesel. CNG:
- Is made by compressing natural gas to less than 1% of its volume at standard atmospheric pressure
- Consists mostly of methane
- Is colorless, tasteless and in liquid form, is odorless
- Is commonly drawn from domestically drilled natural gas wells
Advantages Of CNG
CNG Is Affordable
- Switching to CNG means paying much less at the pump
- CNG leads to substantially reduced maintenance costs, longer vehicle lifespans and various other types of life-cycle savings
- Natural gas is the lowest-cost transportation fuel available
CNG Is Safe
- NGVs have been proven to meet or exceed the most stringent federal crash testing, among all the required US Department of Transportation safety standards
- NGVs have stronger fuel storage cylinders than gasoline and propane powered vehicles (source), making them less likely to rupture
- CNG Vehicles also contain “sealed fuel systems” to further prevent spills and evaporative losses
- While traditional gasoline pools on the ground after an accident, creating a safety hazard, natural gas dissipates into the air almost instantly, further minimizing its ignition risk compared to gasoline
CNG Is Driver-Friendly
- NGVs are remarkably quiet to drive, with up to a 90% lower dB level than diesel vehicles
- Bi-fuel CNG vehicles offer drivers the flexibility of running on traditional gasoline and diesel, as well as natural gas
- Drivers can fuel up from the convenience of their private job site, garage, etc.—thanks to on-site commercial NGV fueling stations and home fueling appliances
- Louisiana is currently home to more than 20 NGV public fueling stations (and CNG drivers now have access to more than 930 public fill stations nationwide)
CNG Is Eco-Friendly
- Natural gas is the cleanest and greenest transportation fuel available
- CNG reduces carbon dioxide by nearly one-third, and toxic emissions by up to 90% (compared to gasoline or diesel)
- Replacing one older diesel bus with a natural gas bus is equivalent to taking 21 cars off the road
CNG Is Domestic
- 97% of America’s natural gas is produced in North America (so every gallon of natural gas we use to power our vehicles is one less gallon of petroleum that needs to be imported)
- Every new NGV fueling station creates 45 new jobs (source) within a 5-mile radius
- Every 1% increase in natural gas production can create 35,000 jobs
- Powering our vehicles with natural gas works to offset the billions we spend on foreign oil every week
